Homemade biscuits that rise tall, bake golden, and taste like comfort.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (grated or cold and cubed)
  • 1 cup half-and-half or whole milk
  • ½ tablespoon melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and sea salt.
  3. Cut in the butter: Add grated or cubed cold butter into the dry mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, gently work the butter in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized bits of butter still visible.
  4. Add milk: Pour in the half-and-half (or whole milk). Stir just until the dough comes together—don’t overmix.
  5. Roll and fold for layers:
  6. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  7. Roll it out to about ½–1 inch thick.
  8. Fold the dough top to bottom, then roll out again to ½–1 inch thick.
  9. Repeat this rolling and folding process 2–3 more times. You should still see little specks of butter in the dough—this is what makes them flaky!
  10. Cut biscuits: Using a biscuit cutter or a floured glass, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Gather scraps, re-roll gently, and cut again.
  11. Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 10–12 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and biscuits are puffed.
  12. Brush with butter: As soon as they come out of the oven, brush the tops with melted butter for extra flavor.
  13. Serve warm with jam, honey, or gravy—and enjoy those buttery layers!
